The U.S. Department of Energy 2009 Solar Decathlon was the fourth time the competition has been organized and the third time Virginia Tech has entered. During each of the past Solar Decathlons, more than 100,000 visitors flocked to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., to visit the "solar village." The Solar Decathlon is an educational project of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and is supported by DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory and event and team sponsors from the private sector. The houses were displayed on the National Mall in Washington, DC, in October 2009 and were toured by the public.
